Sierra-Oakhurst Kiwanis Newsletter April 2020

John Lassos, PRESIDENT

PRESIDENTS CORNER – Well, my fellow Kiwanians this last month certainly has been very unusual, because of the mandates regarding COVID 19. My best wishes for a Happy Easter to all; be safe and healthy has we all battle this current health crisis together.

  • ZOOM meeting took place with 9 members signing in on Tuesday,April 14th. There were a few “hiccups” , so if you missed itthere will be another ZOOM meeting on April 21.
  • A scholarship committee was formed. 27 applications from thethree high schools were reviewed and 5 – $1000.00 scholarships were awarded; 2 to Glacier High School students, 2 to Minarets High School students and 1 to a Yosemite High School student. MHS has already decided to have a Facebook Graduation/Awards Program and the other schools are on a wait and see as to how they will provide their awards.
  • After 23 years the Children’s Museum of the Sierras has sadly announced that they have permanently closed their doors. It had been a difficult last few years for them financially and the mandated Covid 19 closures made them realize they could no longer serve the mountain communities. The “Breakfast with Santa” event still has the support of all the partners and is still scheduled for Dec. 5th.Upcoming Events will be announced when we able to re-schedule.

Sierra-Oakhurst Kiwanis Newsletter January 2020

John Lassos, PRESIDENT

PRESIDENTS CORNER – HAPPY NEW YEAR! I trust everyone enjoyed time with family and friends. I would like to share something I received from a fellow Kiwanian.

It’s 2020!
I’m tired and worn out, and I still have so many unanswered questions! I haven’t found out who let the dogs out.. where’s the beef…how to get to Sesame St…why Dora doesn’t just use Google Maps…Why do all flavors of fruit loops taste exactly the same, or how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop……why eggs are packaged in a flimsy carton, but batteries are secured in plastic that’s tough as nails…what does the fox say…why “abbreviated” is such a long word:or why is there a D in “fridge”, but not in refrigerator…why lemon juice is made with artificial flavor, yet dish washing liquid is made with real lemons…why they sterilize the needle for lethal injections…and, why do you have to “put your two cents in” but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”, where’s that extra penny going to…why does the Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same tune…why did you just try to sing those two previous songs…and just what exactly is Victoria’s Secret and where is Waldo? Can you hear me now?…..
